We caught up with Mitch in Japan - he's quite possibly the fastest rider we've seen with a top speed pushing 47kmh. Also has some awesome terrain to ride on - extensive smooth winding asphalt paths.
WSMag: Name, age and where you are from / where do you wing skate and how long have you been doing it?
Mitch: Name: Mitch Ramos
Age: Level 49
Born: in the Philippines
Residence: living permanently in Japan
Wingskating since: October 2020
Playground: Empty cycling roads along the river
WSMag: What conditions work best for you?
Mitch: Best conditions that work best for me: NNW winds 8-9m/s in winter. Spring winds are weak. No winds in summer.
WSMag: What board and set up do you ride?
Mitch: Board: Yocaher Dropdown Longboard, Orangatang Loaded Wheels Kegel 80mm with Bones bearings
Wing type: Gaastra Wing Cross 3.5
Camera: Insta360 One X2 with self stick tied to the nose or tail of the wing and GoPro Hero8 with DIY mounted on the side of the wing.
WSMag: Manoeuvres, jumps or tricks currently working on?
Mitch: None. As an adrenaline junkie, I just want to reach 50kph on a straight empty cycling road.
WSMag: Advice for someone wanting to get into the sport?
Mitch: beginners need longboard/skateboard/snowboard skills. strong arms and grip is a must. Always be alert of wind gusts that come out of nowhere.
WSMag: Would you like to see Wingskating going more mainstream and if so where would be a likely event venue?
Mitch:Snow winging going more mainstream with global events and races/competitions possibly: I’ve been snowboarding for 20 years. That’s a new event I would like to see. It should be held in Colorado or somewhere in Canada.
WSMag: Anything else you would like add?
Mitch: I have changed the bladder of my wing once. It was difficult at first but I did it. Next time it’ll be easy.
WSMag: Thanks for your time Mitch - be sure to let us know when you hit 50kmh!
